This week, I’d say I had quite a few of those feelings.
I started my week with “dump dinners” to put in the croc-pot while I was at work. Making and then eating those was definitely adult-y.
My love and I worked on our laundry together. That was kind of adult-y.
But the biggest feeling of adult-ness I felt this week came from….
Drumroll please….
...PROOFREADING!
As an educated adult, I have been trained to read and proofread any words I put to paper. Sure, some mistakes fall through the cracks, but I’d venture to say I am more of a Stephanie Meyer than a E.L.James in my writing. (Stand by for my blog about how poorly edited E.J. James writing is.) Anyways, this week I read a memorandum from the boss of a program that was RIDDLED with mistakes. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT NOBODY PROOFREAD THIS?
I sat with my pen. I read, crossed off, and highlighted. I changed words like “they’re” to “their”. I changed run on sentences to two separate sentences. I changed the a sentence saying “these rules will be implanted for your safety” to “these rules will be implemented for your safety.”
And it felt amazing.
Did I show the person who wrote it all of her mistakes? No. Why? Because it is very un-adult to slam someone’s mistakes in their face. (Bonus adult feeling for not being a jerk.)
Being a grown up, as it turns out, doesn’t happen in a matter of minutes. But proofreading can happen in a matter of minutes if you TAKE THE TIME TO DO IT. Grow up and proofread your work, friends, then you too can feel like an adult.
