A Cubs fan, a Bears fan, a Bulls fan, and a White Sox fan are all wearing the same shirt. What does it say? GO BLACKHAWKS.
Last night for the third time in 6 years the Chicago Blackhawks Hockey Team won the coveted Stanley Cup. Not only did this incredible win bring together a team of 31, but it brought together a community of millions.
With each step toward this seemingly insurmountable goal (pun intended), the loyal Chicago Blackhawks fans brought along new members. With each trip to a Naperville brewery or to an Orland Park sports bar, a new Hawks fan was born. Hockey became our common ground. The cup became our common goal.
In times of immense violence and tragedy, it appears that the NHL did more this week than they had ever intended to. An activity, originally meant to entertain and foster an atmosphere of friendly competition, has also fostered a sense of community in a geographical area miles wide. This is what a fan base is all about. This is what sports are all about. This is Chicago Hockey.
Thank you, Chicago Blackhawks for instilling within us that sense of community that was long ago forgotten. No matter how fleeting the feeling is within these Blackhawks fans is incredible to be a part of. Thank you Hawks and thank you to Chicago for being the best town and the best fans.
Welcome home Lord Stanley. Welcome home.
