One would think that after this incident, I would get over it. I would, in theory, get my own coffee and go to work leaving the silly Starbucks phony behind me. But I couldn’t shake a question I had. Were there times in my own life that I was simply carrying a red cup full of lies?
Which led me to this thought: Christianity is a lot like Starbucks.
Pausing here for Christians to be offended and atheists to stop reading.
What I meant is that my fake-coffee-drinking-acquaintance reminded me of the ways that people in life carry around things they don’t necessarily believe in. The Starbucks paper cups have become a fashion accessory, a statement piece, or a symbol of status. Even if you don’t like coffee (as my fake latte ordering person OBVIOUSLY does not) most people have an order of some sort at Starbucks. Christianity is quite like that. People carry that faith around, they wear their crosses, they quote the bible, but do they really believe in the essence of what it is about? Some Christians order a latte with no caffeine in the sense that they preach love, yet spew hate. Some Christians carry their red cups around, misleading everyone to believe that their faith is a source of energy and invigoration in their lives when really, that is untrue. In which ways do we hide behind our own “red cups” to fit in?
Deep stuff guys.
Instead of filling our cups with lies each day, let’s remember what is important. Loving and helping one another is what Christianity and Starbucks are all about. Ok. Loving and helping one another is what Christianity is all about… Starbucks is about delicious coffee. Another lesson we could learn here is that if you have a horrible coffee order, Brittney will think too hard about it while judging you for two entire days.
